On November 26th, 2010, I was about a month and a half into my first deployment to Afghanistan in support of a mission to clear routes of Improvised Explosive Devices (IED’s). That afternoon, two of our Marines, Sgt. Gabriel Martinez and Cpl. Justin Gaertner, each stepped on pressure-plate activated IED’s which resulted in both of them suffering the loss of their legs. Since their incident both have made very speedy recoveries and have received the support they deserve from several generous charities. When I asked these Marines which organization helped each of them the most with their situation, they both responded with "The Semper Fi Fund." This is why I chose to support this specific organization for my journey down the Mississippi River.
Your donations will go towards providing better support for veterans by helping defray the expenses incurred during hospitalization, rehabilitation and recovery, and assisting with the expenses associated with the purchase of specialized equipment, adaptive vehicles and home modifications.
The Semper Fi Fund is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that helps America's true heroes recovering from catastrophic injury. They have been awarded the highest ratings from Watch Dog groups: A+ from Charity Watch for the second year, and they are one of only three veteran nonprofits to receive this rating the last two reports. They’ve also received 4 stars (their highest rating) from Charity Navigator for five consecutive years. They also maintain an extremely low overhead - 6% so more money goes directly to support injured Marines and other service members who serve with Marines and their families. Since establishing the Semper Fi Fund in 2004, they've issued more than 67,000 grants, totaling more than $85 million in assistance to over 11,000 of our heroes and their families.
